STRANGERS HELPING STRANGERS PLANS FOOD DRIVE AT CONCERT
9/22/2004
Read Article
Strangers Helping Strangers is pleased to announce that they will be
holding a non-perishable food drive in conjunction with the
Minnesota-based band The Big Wu. The food drive will take place at the
band’s concert in Portland, ME on Thursday, September 30th at The
Asylum. All food collected at this event will benefit the Preble
Street Resource Center in Portland.
Strangers Helping Strangers (SHS) is coming off its largest food drive
to date, collecting an estimated 4,100 non-perishable items at
Strangefolk’s 9th Annual Garden of Eden Festival over Labor Day Weekend
to benefit the Franklin County Community Meals in Gardiner, MA. With
that food drive and recent efforts, SHS has now collected over 12,000
items this year for food banks and charities throughout the Northeast,
making it by far the organization’s most successful year since forming.
Strangers Helping Strangers will be holding food drives at several
other concerts and festivals this fall as well. Please visit
http://www.shstrangers.org/events.html for all upcoming food drives.
Strangers Helping Strangers was formed in 1997 by Strangefolk fans that
saw an opportunity to help those less fortunate by collecting
non-perishable food at various Strangefolk concerts throughout the
Northeast and donating it to food banks and charities in the cities and
towns Strangefolk played. The first food drive was held in February
1998. Since then SHS has collected well over 30,000 items for
charities from Maine to Delaware. In addition to working closely with
Strangefolk, SHS has expanded to work with other bands such as The Big
Wu, Assembly of Dust, Dark Star Orchestra, Max Creek, Zen Tricksters,
Scarecrow Collection, UMelt and many more. SHS offers incentives and
prizes to those who donate at their events, including live CD’s,
merchandise, tickets to future concerts and much more.
Over the past year, Strangers Helping Strangers has been working
towards fully incorporating and gaining official 501c3 non-profit
status. A benefit concert was held on May 15, 2004 at Mexicali Blues
in Teaneck, NJ in order to raise funds to turn this long-standing dream
into a reality. In July 2004, SHS became fully incorporated and filed
for 501c3 status. The application is currently being reviewed, and SHS
has gained preliminary 501c3 non-profit status.
