The Big Wu

The first music made by eventual band members was in 1992. Terry VanDeWalker, Chris Castino, and Jason Fladager lived in the same dorm at St. Olaf College in Minnesota. Chris on bass, Jason on guitar and Terry on kit. The school had a program where bands could get one free hour a week at a practice space with a sound engineer.
Practicing for months, the band got their first gig on Valentine's Day 1992. The name Big Wu was borrowed from the name of the volcano in the movie "Joe vs the Volcano". Then everyone shuffled instruments as Nathan (keyboards) and Andrew (bass) joined. Chip House was later enlisted as a permanent drummer.
The band got a regular gig in nearby Northfield MN and eventually expanded to six members. In 1995 Al Oikari showed up to jam and never left. The Wu's following was growing largely due to a house gig at the Cabooze Bar in the West Bank section of Minneapolis. Then, a winning slot on a Battle of the Bands contest, won the band a slot on 1997 Horde Tour. Everywhere they went, the "Wu Family" of fans followed. In 1999 the band went full-time and began to tour relentlessly.
Big Wu has released 3 studio recordings in addition to 3 live ones. "Tracking Buffalo Through the Bathtub" 1997, "Folktale's" 2000 and "Spring Reverb" was just released last year
The Wu Family has been rewarded every year, since 1999, with a Big Wu Family Reunion. Just 500 of their favorite fans and a whole lot of music converge annually to party and reminisce.
THE BIG WU stands at the musical entrance to the American Beauty generation with its extraordinary range of feeling and expression intact. Fending off the music industry's pressure to conform to cute, stylish, butt-wiggling imagery, the members of THE BIG WU have fearlessly chosen to exist beyond the mainstream, embracing their passion for playing music on their own terms, and their hard-won ability to just be themselves.
