The Big Wu

First, there was intrigue. Nary a soul but the tight-lipped members of the senior party entertainment committee knew the name or the precise nature of the entertainment scheduled to perform at Road Trip 2002. There was hushed conversation as huddled parents chattered about anonymous donations and big name bands. Then amidst the heightened secrecy, there was the famous website snafu: June 10, 2002 -- Big Wu -- Edina High School-- Edina, Minnesota. An industrious senior, surfing the net, had inadvertently stumbled upon the information on a tour date website. And the word was out!
Party co-chair Libby Horner promptly squelched the Hornet buzz by proclaiming the Big Wu would no longer perform at EHS due to increased security risks caused by the leak. But alas, the show went on and the rest, as they say, became history when 500+ thrilled seniors overcame exhaustion and graduation fever to hear the homegrown rock’n’roll band with the national reputation belt out tune after awesome tune.
"This has to be the best senior party to ever rock the halls of EHS!" gushed one senior as the Big Wu took the stage amidst delighted screams and general pandemonium.
Named for the volcano in the 1990 Tom Hanks’ film "Joe Versus the Volcano," The Big Wu has been called "the heartland’s premier grassroots attraction." Pleasing fans ever since its inception in 1992, the group first began jamming together as students at St. Olaf’s College in Northfield, Minnesota. Today, there is a growing consensus that the versatile jam-band
-- featuring Chris Castino (lead guitar, vocals), Jason Fladager (lead guitar, vocals), Andy Miller (bass, vocals), Al Oikari (keyboard, vocals) and Terry VanDeWalker (percussion, vocals) --is on the verge of something big.
On the evening of June 10, 2002, at EHS, fans most definitely agreed.
